Fascinating Deptford facts
Since Deptford was en route from London to Canterbury, it was passed through by those heading to and from Canterbury Cathedral.
As such, Deptford gets a mention in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales (specifically, The Reeve’s Tale). There was a ford in Deptford at the time and this evolved from a wooden crossing to a stone bridge, hence the naming of the “Battle of Deptford Bridge in 1497. The war was over taxes being levied on the people of Cornwall, who marched to London for the confrontation with the King’s army. Needless to say, it didn’t end well for the Cornish protesters.
Due to its proximity to the Thames, Deptford was predominantly a fishing village (known as Deptford Strand) up until the time of Henry VIII who then developed the area into a dock for repairing his fleet of ships and building new ones.
The name “Deptford” comes from the term “deep ford” because there was a ford across the Ravensbourne (near the DLR station). The area was part of a trackway built by the Celts and then developed in Roman times as part of Watling Street.
