Fascinating Lee Green facts
Robert Cocking, a keen amateur scientist, was the first person to die in a parachute accident in 1837 in Lee. Cocking was 61 years old at the time and had no parachuting experience. His parachute broke up during its descent, with the basket (early parachutes had baskets) detaching from the canopy at around 250 feet from the ground. Cocking was killed instantly in a Lee field.
Edmond Halley, famous for his “Halley’s Comet” discovery and prediction is buried in the churchyard of St Margaret’s Church in Lee. Two other Astronomers Royals are also buried there; Nathaniel Bliss and John Pond.
In 1815, both cavalry and foot regiments went through Lee Green as they were en route to the Battle of Waterloo.
