Fascinating Streatham facts
Although now a densely populated area of SW London, Streatham was originally classed as a mere village right up until the 1700s. However, the population exploded once rumours of the health benefits of the Streatham Spring began to circulate.
The spring was named after the area (the Streatham Wells) and also attracted wealthy Londoners who settled in the area. During the late 19th century, the area around Wellfield Road and Sunnyhill Road became heavily populated due to it being the locale of the original village.
Wellfield Road (aka Leigham Lane) was one of the main arterial routes from the village to one of the wells. Another was located in what’s known as The Rookery which is on the southern side of the Common.
