How did Rayleigh get its name?
So rumour has it, Rayleigh got its name from the Old English word “rǣge”. This translates as “female roe-deer or she-goat” plus “lēah”, which means a “clearing”. So from this, we can deduce that Rayleigh means “wood or clearing of the wild she-goats or roe-deer”. Obviously, that’s a bit of a mouthful if you want to tell someone you’re off to visit Rayleigh!
