Billericay and the US connection
According to popular belief, the Pilgrim Fathers met in Billericay prior to their epic voyage in the Mayflower across the Atlantic to North America (a.k.a. New World).
It’s certainly true that many local names in Billericay bear the Mayflower name. We have Mayflower house, the Mayflower Morris Men and Mayflower School to name only a very few.
what we do know is that Christopher Martin, a Billericay merchant sailed on the Mayflower in 1620 as the official Ship’s Governor who was responsible for procuring supplies for the voyage.
Three others from Billericay sailed with Martin; his wife Mary and her son as well as John Langemore who was their servant. Sadly all of them died not long after they arrived though.
Nevertheless, this didn’t deter others from Billericay from making the journey. In fact, this can be evidenced by the name of the town of Billerica in Massachusetts. It was established in 1655 and named by travellers from Billericay in Essex.
