Fascinating Rotherhithe facts
Due to its proximity to the Thames, Rotherhithe has an illustrious history as a port and has had various shipyards from the Elizabethan era onwards. In fact, Rotherhithe has had working docks right up until the 1970s although the area has largely been substantially redeveloped since then.
There’s some speculation about how Rotherhithe got its name. Perhaps most likely, “Rotherhithe” probably comes from the Anglo-Saxon Hrȳðer-hȳð which means “landing-place for cattle”. Other suggestions are ‘Red Rose Haven’ and ‘rehra’ (mariner’s) hythe (haven or landing place). Rotherhithe has had a few names over the years with the first recorded one being around 1105 AD as Rederheia. More recently, Redriff/Redriffe has been used although this was also applied in a more generic way to a large area of the nearby riverfront and not Rotherhithe specifically.
