Purley Trivia
No one is quite sure how Purley got its name although there is some speculation that the name derives from “Pirlea” which roughly translates in Anglo Saxon as “Peartree Lea”. Also, the meaning of Purley is as a field by a river where was a riverside field inhabited by water-dwelling snipe or bitterns (long-billed birds).
During the Middle Ages, there was a Purley Farm in the area. It was part of the Benendon estates that were owned by the wealthy Huscarle and Carew families. They also owned land in Berkshire, including a place called Purley. When they summoned men from their Berkshire “HQ”, the men were referred to by the name “de Pirley” i.e. “of Purley”. For example, Richard de Pirley. It’s therefore possible that the original Purley in Berkshire got its name as mentioned further above.
