Fascinating Crawley facts
Most Crawley residents know little about the town’s history. There was no mention of Crawley anywhere until the year 1203 when the area is mentioned in relation to the application of a licence to hold a weekly market (yes, licenses were even required back then). It was granted by the way 🙂
From 1203 onwards, Crawley had a few different names but by 1316, its current name was settled upon. However, Crawley didn’t officially become a town until 1947 when Three Bridge, Ifield and the small market town of Crawley (and the bits in between) were merged to become the Crawley we’re more familiar with today, although its boundaries were extended slightly in 1983 to reach the M23 in the east and Ifield West towards the west.
